Mary, Help of Christians (Latin: Maria Auxilium Christianorum) is one of the most beloved and powerful titles of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and it holds deep theological, historical, and pastoral significance in the Catholic Church.
Origin of the Title
The title “Help of Christians” dates back to the early Church, but it was formally inserted into the Litany of Loreto by Pope Pius V after the miraculous victory at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. This battle, in which the Christian naval forces achieved an unexpected triumph, was attributed to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary through the Rosary.
Later, Pope Pius VII officially established the Feast of Mary, Help of Christians on May 24, as a thanksgiving to Our Lady for his safe return to Rome after enduring captivity under Napoleon.
Devotion Popularized by St. John Bosco
The greatest promoter of this title was St. John Bosco (Don Bosco), the founder of the Salesians of Don Bosco. He had a deep, supernatural devotion to Mary under this title and built the magnificent Basilica of Mary Help of Christians in Turin, Italy, in 1868.
Don Bosco often said:
“Have faith in Mary, Help of Christians, and you will see what miracles are.”
To this day, Salesians around the world continue to spread devotion to Mary, Help of Christians, especially among youth, the poor, and those most in need.
