Easter Glory in Izmir: Christ is Risen at St. John’s Cathedral
On Easter Sunday, the faithful of Izmir, Turkey, gathered in St. John’s Cathedral to celebrate the most glorious feast of the Christian calendar: the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Amid the rising incense, echoing alleluias, and the flickering flame of the Paschal candle, hearts were lifted and faith rekindled in this ancient land of Asia Minor—so intimately connected with the earliest days of the Church.
St. John’s Cathedral, nestled in the heart of Izmir (the ancient Smyrna of the Book of Revelation), became a meeting place of East and West. In the very region where St. John the Apostle once proclaimed the Gospel, his cathedral again echoed with the timeless proclamation: “Christ is risen! Truly He is risen!”
The celebration united people of diverse backgrounds in a single Body of faith, as the liturgy of the Roman Rite unfolded in its beauty and solemnity. From the chanting of the Exsultet to the joyful renewal of baptismal promises, the Paschal mystery was made present with clarity and grace.
This sacred moment, captured in a short video now available on YouTube, offers viewers a glimpse into the living Church in Turkey—a community vibrant with tradition, faith, and Easter joy.
