On Friday evening, a profound spirit of prayer filled St. John’s Cathedral in Konak, İzmir, as the Catholic faithful gathered to honor the memory of Pope Francis, who passed into eternal life on the Second Day of Easter this year. The cathedral, standing as a beacon of the Church’s presence in Turkey, became a house of mourning and hope, as the community entrusted the soul of the Holy Father to the mercy of God.

The Most Reverend Martin Kmetec, OFM Conv., Archbishop of İzmir, presided over the Holy Mass celebrated for the repose of Pope Francis’s soul. Faithful from across the city, and even visitors from other parts of Turkey, filled the Cathedral to capacity, united in a single heart of gratitude and sorrow.

The Mass was offered according to the liturgical texts for the Dead, enriched with prayers particular to the death of a Roman Pontiff. The readings reflected the sure hope of the Resurrection.
Archbishop Kmetec, in his homily, spoke tenderly of Pope Francis’s legacy, highlighting his paternal care for the poor, his call to conversion, and his enduring reminder that mercy is the very face of Christ. The Archbishop encouraged all present to pray not only for his soul but also for the Church he loved and led, that she may continue to walk in faithfulness to Christ under her new shepherd.

The Mass was marked by deep solemnity: the Cathedral choir led the faithful in ancient hymns of supplication, and a moment of silence was held before the final commendation, as the faithful reflected on the great gift of the papacy and the bonds of communion that unite the Church across nations and languages.
Many moments from the evening were captured in beautiful photographs, which accompany this article to bear witness to the Church in Turkey’s love and fidelity to the successor of Peter.

The funeral Mass for Pope Francis would be held the next day in Rome, with mourners gathered from around the world. Even in distant İzmir, the bonds of faith and charity were palpably strong, reminding all of the Church’s universality and her unbroken communion between earth and heaven.
In these days of mourning and hope, the Catholic community in İzmir stands firm in prayer, repeating the words of the ancient prayer for the Pope:
“Requiem aeternam dona ei, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat ei.”
“Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.”
