“He will be great before the Lord.”
Luke 1:15

The Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist is one of only three birthdays celebrated in the Church’s liturgical calendar — alongside Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary. This unique celebration reminds us that John’s birth was not only miraculous but part of God’s plan from the womb.

John the Baptist, the forerunner of the Lord, was filled with the Holy Spirit even before his birth (cf. Luke 1:41). His entire life was a burning witness to repentance, humility, and preparing hearts for the coming of the Messiah. His words — “He must increase, and I must decrease” (John 3:30) — echo the very heart of Christian discipleship.

Today’s feast emphasizes that every human life has purpose from conception. The Church rejoices in the divine mission entrusted to John — to prepare the way for Jesus Christ — and in doing so, affirms the sacred dignity of every unborn child.

Patron of Converts and Preachers

John’s call to repentance and his boldness in proclaiming truth make him a model for all who preach the Gospel today — and a special intercessor for those turning from sin to grace.

Reflection:

Am I preparing the way of the Lord in my family, workplace, and culture? Like John, am I willing to decrease so Christ may increase?

Blessed Virgin Mary, who rejoiced at John’s leap in your womb’s presence, pray that we too may leap in joy for Christ.
