A Time to Return to the Pierced Heart That Loves Us Most
“Behold this Heart which has loved men so much, yet is so little loved in return.”
—Our Lord to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque
For centuries, the Sacred Heart of Jesus has been a sign of Christ’s infinite love—a heart that burns with mercy, that bleeds for sinners, and that longs for our trust and reparation.
The Church dedicates the entire month of June to this devotion. Why? Because love is the heart of Christianity, and the Heart of Jesus is the source of all grace.
What Is the Sacred Heart?
The Sacred Heart is not merely a symbol—it is the living Heart of the risen Christ, pierced by a lance on the Cross (John 19:34), from which flowed blood and water, signs of the Eucharist and Baptism.
It is a Heart wounded by our sins but also overflowing with forgiveness, compassion, and tenderness.
To love the Sacred Heart is to love Christ Crucified and Risen, not in the abstract, but intimately—heart to heart.
Devotion Rooted in Revelation
While the early Church Fathers reflected on the Heart of Christ, this devotion blossomed in the 17th century through St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a French Visitation nun. Jesus revealed to her His Sacred Heart ablaze with love, surrounded by thorns of indifference and ingratitude.
He asked for:
-
Frequent Communion, especially on First Fridays
-
Holy Hours of reparation
-
Consecration to His Sacred Heart
This devotion was later confirmed and promoted by Popes and saints, including St. John Paul II, St. Padre Pio, and Pope Pius XII, who wrote the encyclical Haurietis Aquas on the Sacred Heart.
Bring the Sacred Heart into Your Life
-
Consecrate your home and family to the Sacred Heart
-
Celebrate First Fridays in reparation for sin
-
Spend time in Eucharistic Adoration
-
Pray the Litany of the Sacred Heart
-
Reflect on His Heart daily: “Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make my heart like unto Thine.”
Why It Matters Today
In a world hardened by division, selfishness, and despair, we are invited back to the Heart of the One who loved us to the end (John 13:1).
The Sacred Heart is the answer to the coldness of the modern soul. It is where we find healing, peace, and true identity.
A Simple Prayer
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You.
Make my heart like Yours: humble, pure, and aflame with love.
