Palm Sunday Pilgrimage to the House of the Virgin Mary: A Journey of Unity and Faith

Written by EWTN Theotokos

On Palm Sunday, April 13, 2025, something truly beautiful happened in the city of Izmir, Turkey. Christians from all denominations—Catholics, Orthodox, and Protestants—gathered at St. John’s Cathedral in Alsancak to begin a day that would become a living testament to unity, reverence, and faith.

Early in the morning, believers came together to celebrate Holy Mass, waving blessed palm branches and singing praises in commemoration of Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem. But the liturgy was only the beginning. After the celebration, dozens of cars and buses set out toward a destination sacred to many: the House of the Virgin Mary near Ephesus.

When the pilgrims arrived at Meryem Ana Evi, they were joined by hundreds of others—local and international Christians alike—for one of the most moving moments of the day: the Way of the Cross. Together, they walked station by station, reflecting on the Passion of Christ in the very place believed to have been Mary’s final earthly home.

The hills around the house were filled with prayer, silence, and song. People of all ages and backgrounds walked the same path, each carrying personal prayers, intentions, and gratitude. It was a powerful witness that faith transcends boundaries, and that Mary, as Mother of all Christians, draws her children together.

This video captures the essence of that day—the spiritual depth, the shared emotion, and the sacred atmosphere that enveloped everyone present. It reminds us that a pilgrimage is more than a journey to a holy site. It is a renewal of the heart. It is walking together as the Body of Christ.

We invite you to watch and reflect, and to remember that, even in our busy world, sacred moments still unfold—quietly, powerfully, and with grace.
